Does going through a law firm that specializes in credit repair really help?

I recently signed up with Lexington Law Firm for help with getting inaccurrate and negative information off my credit report. Has anyone ever used one of these services, and do they really help increase your credit scores, etc.?

  1. they can't do anything you can't do yourself and in some cases can hurt you
  2. First of all, you will NEVER be able to remove negative information off your credit report IF IT'S ACCURATE. Accurate information will stay there for many years. However, inaccurate information can be removed but you don't need a law firm to do it. www.annualcreditreport.com is the free credit report website, not freecreditreport.com Since it is now impossible to file for bankruptcy without filing for credit counseling, having "credit counseling" show up on your credit report can actually hurt your chances while applying for credit. Since counseling is the first step you have to take before you file for BK, lenders will be wary.
  3. why are you asking me?
  4. No. Typically law firms that deal with credit are 1 of 2 things: bankruptcy lawyers or debt settlement lawyers. If you think you need to file bankruptcy then you will definitely need a lawyer. Debt settlement on the other hand is very bad for your credit. They will tell you to stop paying your bills and to pay them instead. They take your money and put it in an escrow account and wait for there to be enough money to settle your debts for less than you owe 1 at a time, as well as cover their fees. I would say you don't need to pay someone else to screw up your credit. If you're having trouble with your debt call your creditors and see if they will work with you. If you're reasonable with them, they will probably offer you a reasonable solution. If that doesn't work, then try a consumer credit counseling service (cccs). They specialize in working with your all your creditors to lower interst rates and monthly payments so that you can be debt free in 5 years or less. Otherwise, there is no magic lawyer trick that will help your credit other than re-paying what you owe. If there is inaccurate information on your credit report then you don't need to pay a lawyer to dispute it with the credit bureau, you can do that yourself.
