Credit report confusion?
Hello: I am confused about some information on my credit report, but don't want to use any credit repair agencies because they are usually a scam. I had an account that went into collection years ago, but now both items appear in my report: the original one, and the one that went into collection (which is basically the same account) as negative items. I thought that only one of them was supposed to be in my report, let's say the one that is under collection, since the original one shouldn't count anymore?..Well if you can answer or tell me where can I get more information, it would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

- The original creditor can report for the full reporting period even if a collector is reporting. When the original creditor sells or assigns the account and the collector is also reporting, if the original creditor continues to report then they must report it with a zero balance. If the account gets passed around from collector to collector, only the collector who actually has the account may report it. You might click on my profile and read the links I've included to the FTC FDCPA and FCRA
- Answer number 1 is correct, both are reporting, you can send the original creditor a letter requesting that they remove it from your credit report, but if you never paid it off it will probably remain for the duration time period.
